I purchased sweaters from Mr. Carol Nesmith in late 90s early 2000s. Old records burned so date not certain. But last winter I purchased more sweaters along with his Gilmore. I showed some of both recently stags into cocks. Better fowl don't exist, Carol, Chris, and Margie Nesmith thanks for the great fowl. I hope to get the greys soon if they're half as good I'll be very pleased.

Breeding from the pit!
I see a lot of guys breeding fowl because he's pure so and so. From so and so. Back in the day what did it take for rooster to earn the right to the brood pen. Would breed from a untested rooster if he was from from good stock. or would after prove him self first not just living of the famley name. what else did you look for in a brood cock? would you over look physical defects if was pit proven? I.E. short stationd but would cut well to body when he got close. Did you for cock who had won fast and proven he's cutting ability. Or one that had come from behind to show he's gamenes. I'm really only interested in hearing about the gaff long or short. Of course I'm only talking about when it was legal and man was free to do as wished with he's property. D.B.A

Clarets?
When I was a young child I was given 2 different trio's of Clarets by a family that had to move into a more incorporated city. One trio was White, and the 2nd was Black Breasted Reds. I was a kid so I didn't know anything. I was told by the father to keep the White's with the Whites and keep the Black's with the Black's (animal segregation, lol). I did just this. Later I was given a White Hackle Cock, and because it had color I through it in with the Black Breasted Red Clarets before school one morning because I had no other pens, when I got home from school the Claret Roo was dead along with 1 hen (remember I was a kid and before that never knew that Roo's would kill hennies). After that I let the White Hackle Cock free-range as we lived on 5 acres. And this guy would disappear for days at times then come back with hens. He came back with 2 Rhode Island Red Hens, then came home with a big White Hen, later he went and got a bunch on Bantam Hens. I would hear stories that he was going acres away to neighbors and beating up their Roos. Remember I was a kid so I didn't know better then to pen him. Later a dog got him. And even after that he was hanging on. Mom had to come out and wring his neck.
Wow that was a lot of typing. I said all of this to ask, are Clarets considered old? Are Clarets considered slow? I plan on getting some and keeping them same two separate lines. I am getting old, and I have been finding myself reliving my childhood. Went and got a Skate Board, went and got the same model BMX Bike I had as a kid. And those Clarets had a special place to me. Getting up feeding them daily, watering them. I feel it taught me responsibility and I just want to relive them. Just makes me wonder if they were ever any good, seeing that I got the Claret family's from a family who kept birds and I got the White Hackle that finished off the Black Breasted Red Claret from just a random neighbor who just kept a bunch of chickens, sheep, hogs to live off of and feed their family (well maybe there was more to it then I knew as a child).

Benefits of lime on the ground
Title pretty much say it all. I was told to turn soil in brood pen and cover lime once twice a year and do same in all pens and tie cord area. And let the rain wash it in to the ground. it will kill and Diseases or nasty that mite be lurking. And sprinkle on perches. Watch how that grass will grow. Good luck D.B.A
